Chapter Twenty Five

Rory

I heard the front door shut and knew the others had left, giving Elic and me some time alone. Well, and to go eat. Goddess, I hope my brothers threw away every scrap of that congealed looking rabbit.

I changed into pajamas then went to find Elic. He was sitting in his room, staring at the wall.

“Hey,” I said from his doorway.

“Hey,” he answered.

“Rule number one. Don’t eat anything Ravena cooks if you can help it. Follow our lead, we’ll show you how to avoid it without hurting her feelings. She seems to love to cook but she is quite terrible at it.” I felt like that needed saying first and foremost.

“It can’t be that bad,” he said, grinning up at me.

“Oh, it can. It most certainly can. There is dried and salted meat hidden in the woodshed. There’s enough there to keep us from starving until we figure out how to nicely tell her to find a new hobby. May I?” I asked, nodding to his bed.

“Sure.” He tilted his head to indicate I should come in, drawing his legs up to his chest and hugging them. “This is weird,” he finished, looking around the room.

“The room is weird?” I asked, knowing what he meant.

“No. Not the room. The room is nice.” He tucked his legs under himself. He was restless and seemed uncomfortable. “This is weird.” He waved his hand to the space between us.

“It won’t be. Not for long,” I said, patting the space beside me on the bed. “Ravena’s capacity to care is deep and to understand is endless. We think it is part of her magic that she may not be aware of. She’s incredibly kind and generous, despite her beginnings here.”

I watched Elic’s silver hair catch the light from the torches as he slid from the chair to the spot next to me. “She said she doesn’t care. About us. About any of it,” he said, laying his head on my shoulder. “I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too,” I said, resting my hand in his hair. “And she means it. She doesn’t care. Not even a tiny bit. She just wants all of us to be safe and find peace, and she knows I care for you. She is more than happy to share if you are.” I let my hand tangle in his hair.

“For the first time, Rory, we have an opportunity to be together without Rowan beating us down. I can live with that. I can live with whatever it takes for you and me to be safe.” He angled from me, catching me with his odd, yellow eyes. “What happened, Rory? What happened to him?”

“The examiner said he must have had a heart defect that no one knew about. His heart just stopped,” I said, meeting his eyes with my own.

What I said was the truth. His heart stopped. I might love Elic, but the secret of that night would die with the four who knew it. It wasn’t a trust issue so much as a binding promise made.
